Andropause…The Loss of Vital Testosterone

Most men that watch professional football have heard it said “He lost a step!” It usually refers to a professional running back or tight end getting just little bit slower than in his previous years as he moves from his early twenties and into his 30s. Losing some of that lightning speed might be attributable to losing some of that powerful testosterone production.

Testosterone is the male sex hormone that makes men masculine. It gives men their deeper voices, greater muscle mass and facial hair. Testosterone production in men’s bodies can slow as early as his mid-twenties at a rate of 1—2% per year. Annually that may not be a lot, but over time it takes a toll on men.

By age 50, men may have already lost 25 to 50% of this vital hormone. And by age 60, many men with low testosterone have more estrogen (the female sex hormone) than women of the same age.
Also known as the “male menopause” andropause is the result of the loss of testosterone production in men. Because it is such a slow process, andropause is given far less attention than menopause in women.

Testosterone—More Than Just A Sex Hormone

Testosterone is not only a powerful male sex hormone that makes men masculine, it is also gives men (and women…yes, guys, women require small amounts of testosterone to be healthy, too) a sense of zest and excitement for life. It makes men and women want to get out of bed in the morning.

For men, low testosterone can lead to greater odds for Alzheimer’s disease. Research also shows that men with low testosterone levels can expect to have more fat around the belly where men produce estrogen, by the way. Men can also experience hot flashes, more prevalence of diabetes and heart attacks and even earlier death rates. Not a lot of good news there.

The Good News About Andropause

The good news is that when “partnering” with a well-trained integrative medical doctor, a lot of the underlying issues associated with andropause can be minimized and even reversed. Properly prescribed and carefully monitored optimal hormonal levels that are used with a complete program that includes careful assessment of a man’s adrenal and thyroid glands and ability to metabolize nutrients, men can feel 10, 15 even 20 years younger when the full program takes effect.
