The Vital Butterfly Shaped Gland in Your Neck

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland located in the lower part of your neck right below your Adam’s apple.  Even though it only weighs about an ounce, this amazing gland is responsible for making and storing vital hormones that help control your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and how fast you turn food into energy (metabolism).

The less the thyroid does it job, the harder it is for you to lose weight, control your blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature.

The Thyroid Gland Impacts Every Single Cell in Your Body

No cell can completely perform all of its task properly without the essential hormones produced by your incredible thyroid gland. Hormones, the body’s messenger system, tell every cell and organ what to do and when to do it.

The most important hormones produced and stored for you in the amazing thyroid gland are called T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). When cells need more thyroid hormones to do their work, the tiny pituitary gland deep within the brain hears the call and signals the thyroid with TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) to go ahead and make more T4 and T3.

The thyroid then kicks into high gear and uses iodine found in iodized salt to make more T4 and T3. The thyroid also makes calcitonin to strengthen bones with calcium.

What Happens When the Thyroid Doesn’t Function Well?

A number of things can cause your thyroid to slow down. Poor nutrition, a lack of minerals, proteins and vitamins, certain medications, adrenal fatigue, too much stress, toxins, heavy metals, chronic fatigue and autoimmune disorders can all cause the thyroid to slow down and produce too little hormone.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms:

  • Depression, constipation, weight gain;
  • Swollen eyelids, legs, feet, hands, abdomen;
  • Slow movement, muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain;
  • Brittle nails, rough and dry skin, hair loss, drooping eyelids;
  • Yellowish skin, a dull facial expression, cold hands and feet.
  • Anxiety/panic attacks, poor concentration or memory, easy agitation;
  • Slow speech, headaches, morning stiffness, reduced heart rate, decreased sexual interest.
  • Fatigue and insomnia, hoarse or husky voice, carpel tunnel syndrome.

It could be from a poorly functioning thyroid or hypothyroidism.

To Get Things Back on Track Takes a Highly Skilled Physician

A doctor that understands how to properly test for thyroid hormones and then knows safe and effective ways to get the thyroid back to normal is critical to restoring your thyroid back to health.

The Catch 22 of Thyroid Hormone Testing

Conventional doctors almost always order three tests for thyroid function. That’s what they were taught in medical school. They order:

–       TSH (the hormone produced by the pituitary that calls for more production)

–       T4 (the hormone that is used to make T3) and,

–       T3 ( the actual active thyroid hormone.)

The problem with just ordering these tests alone is that they often do not tell the whole picture.

My Doctor Said “Your Thyroid is Fine.” Why do I feel like a train wreck?”

For patients experiencing symptoms such as fatigue and weight gain listed above from a low producing thyroid, the dysfunctional pituitary gland may be the problem. This can happen from a number of causes such as viruses, bacteria, stress, yeast, inflammation, toxins, pesticides, plastics and dysfunctional mitochondria. This will result in a low normal TSH level along with low normal T4 and T3 levels. Very few doctors understand the significance of this and incorrectly state that the thyroid is fine when in fact it is not.

A second problem can occur when T4, the building block of T3 the active thyroid hormone, does not convert into T3 properly. For doctors that rely too heavily on the TSH test result, the TSH which shows that there is enough T4 made, may appear normal, but, there is nothing showing that the T4 did not convert properly into the required T3.

And yet, another problem may exist when a patient reports fatigue, weight gain and a host of other symptoms of low thyroid. It is also possible that the thyroid converted T4 into reverse T3. This hormone is actually an inactive blocking hormone that stops T3 from attaching to cells to do its work.

Reverse T3 Was Great for Humans Long Ago

When stress levels from famine meant it was time to stop metabolism and store fat for survival, Reverse T3 was critical. but today that doesn’t work. Reverse T3 can be increased with chronic illnesses such as Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, yo-yo dieting (and the quick weight gain that follows) stress, heavy metals and infections commonly present in chronically ill and immune deficient patients. Low thyroid not only results in undesirable symptoms, but it also increases the risk of heart disease and cancer.

And as if this Is not enough, there is also the possibility of thyroid resistance. Often discounted, evidence suggests it does indeed exist. Even if the thyroid makes enough hormone n the blood, the body does not use it.

Any number of thyroid issues can make a patient feel miserable and a physician can still misdiagnose them all.

The Catch 22 with Synthetic Thyroid Hormone Replacement.

Congratulations, your doctor did find hypothyroidism to explain those miserable symptoms. But, now you have to hope he or she knows what to do in ordering your hormone replacement therapy.

Many conventional doctors will order synthetic hormones to replace what’s missing. These often come with poor results and far too many side effects.

Synthroid and Levoxyl are T4 preparations. If your thyroid already cannot convert T4 into T3, or if there is too much Reverse T3 that blocks T3 or if you are already Thyroid resistant, these drugs may do little but cause side effects.

Armour thyroid a pig extract, may be a bit better, but is usually still inadequate.

Even Cytomel, a very short acting T3 version from regular drug stores, may not work well.

The thyroid therapy of choice is a compounded prescription made for just one patient at a time. Prescribing to correct hypothyroidism, takes an understanding of proper dosing in T4/T3 or just T3 preparations.

As an integrative physician, Dr. Alyse, will first determine what is and is not working with your thyroid. This may include underlying mineral and vitamin deficiencies that may cause poor production of the hormone. If hormones are also called for, you will receive safer, molecularly identical bio-identical thyroid hormones. The difference is often reported by patients to be night and day with far fewer side effects.

Dr. Alyse focuses on making sure your critical immune system and “gut”  are operating at peak performance, your mini mighty adrenal glands are restored and your vital thyroid is rebalanced.
